Guía definitiva para preparar un café perfecto en casa: del grano a la taza

The ultimate guide to making perfect coffee at home: from bean to cup

Equipo Catunambú

1. Start with the right grain

Coffee quality begins at the source. Using generic coffee isn't the same as using a select, well-roasted coffee. What should you keep in mind?

  • Type of bean: Arabica (softer and more aromatic) or Robusta (more intense and with more caffeine).
  • Roast: Natural, blended or roasted, according to your taste.
  • Grinding: Choose ground if you don't have a grinder, or whole bean coffee if you prefer maximum freshness.

We recommend:

2. Choose the method that best suits you

The preparation method is as important as the grain itself. Here are the most common ones and how to get the most out of them:

🔸 Italian coffee maker (moka pot)

Ideal for those seeking intensity.

Tip: Use medium heat and remove from heat just before it starts to bubble.

Grinding: medium-fine.

🔸 French press

Perfect for highlighting aromas.

Tip: Infuse for 4 minutes with water at 90-95ºC.

Grinding: coarse.

🔸 Filter or drip coffee maker

Very comfortable and clean.

Tip: Use unbleached filters and a ratio of 60g per liter.

Grinding: medium.

🔸 Capsules

Speed and flavor without complications.

Tip: Purge the machine before use to avoid residual flavors.

We recommend:

3. Water, temperature and proportion: the perfect trio

Water is 98% of coffee, so don't underestimate it. Our advice is:

Use mineral or filtered water.

Ideal temperature: between 90º and 96ºC (never boiling).

Recommended ratio: 10g of coffee per 180ml of water.

4. Time changes everything

Not all methods require the same amount of time:

Method Ideal extraction time
Moka 3-5 minutes
French press 4-5 minutes
Filter 3-4 minutes
Capsules Automatic (~30 seconds)

Too much time can make the coffee taste bitter; too little, and it will be bland.

5. The final touch: ritual and presentation

  • Warm the mug with hot water before serving to maintain the aroma.
  • Add frothed milk, a pinch of cinnamon or cocoa if you like the 'city barista' touch 😉
  • And why not accompany it with something sweet?

If you want to take it to the next level:

  • Use a manual or electric grinder to grind just beforehand.
  • Try different varieties of coffee and experiment with the preparations until you find your perfect 'recipe'.
